Cardfight!! Vanguard - Link Joker Empty Ride 105 and Ride 106

Post  brettbstock Tue Jan 22, 2013 10:11 pm

The following review contains spoilers! Read at your own risk.

Ride 105

Ride 106

With the first 2 episodes of Link Joker finally airing, I can honestly say, it looks like Bushiroad has made another successful transition to a new season. Starting from the beginning of Ride 105 (Or Season 3, Episode 1), we have our protagonist, Aichi Sendou, who has just graduated from middle school, and moved on to High School.

While Aichi's new teacher doesn't seem to be anywhere near as cool as Mr. Mark, we are soon distracted from that loss by the sound of the brand new opening; Vanguard Fight! By Psychic Lover.

Yup. That's right. Psychic Lover. Not Jam Project, who was responsible for the first three openings. Despite the change in artists, I still love this new opening just as much as the old ones. But getting onto the topic of what people came here to read;

As this is the first episode of a new season, we have to re-learn the vanguard rules, as is tradition for this show. Again, for this season, I didn't really mind it. It was a nice refresher course on some of the basic rules that people seem to keep forgetting, while still keeping the entertainment factor up. But I'm getting ahead of myself... Before any of that, we have our brand new character, Katsumi Morikawa Naoki Ishida.

Now... New characters introduced, main premise set; On to the cardfights. As previously stated, we re-learn the basics of fighting in this episode. It also gives us a good look at some new cards, I.E. the Liberators. Upon conclusion of his lesson in how Aichi is so much better than him at Vanguard, Naoki storms off, but before leaving, decides to purchase the Narukami's newest Trial Deck. I'm not going to get into the contents of the deck, but feel free to read up on it if you're really that interested.

Near the end of the first episode, we have a glimpse of Toshiki Kai talking to Miwa, after giving Aichi advice on Naoki's interest in Vanguard. Skipping ahead a few hours, for the last scene of the episode, Aichi is once again, in his new high school. A few minutes in to the lecture of another Mr. Mark wannabe, and we have a new student transfer in. Well, not exactly "new" to anyone whose been watching the series up 'till now. But she's at least new to every student in the room. "New" meaning here that every single person in the room knows exactly who she is, but not even the people watching at home know why she's there. I'm talking about none other than...

"KOURIN-CHAN!!!!" - Morikawa

Captain Axel: Did you watch the new episode yet?
brettbstock: No... Was it good?
Captain Axel: Lots of cool stuff happened to a slice-of-life style pace
brettbstock: Is that a good thing?
Captain Axel: It is if you think the fate of the world doesn't have to be at stake for a card game series to be good.

This conversation pretty much sums up the episode in few words. For the summary of the episode in more than a few words, keep reading.

This episode began similarly to the last one. Aichi was in high school, being bullied for being the pro he is at Vanguard. Suddenly, super-idol Kourin walks up... AND TALKS TO HIM!! Aichi then becomes the most popular kid in the class, next to super-idol Kourin herself. People asking for introductions with super-idol Kourin, meet-ups with super-idol Kourin, etc. Unfortunately, Naoki happened to want to have a fight with Aichi, which was interrupted by our blue haired protagonists' sudden popularity spike. A few hours later, after school had let out, Aichi was hanging out with his friends (and Morikawa) at Card Capital. Morikawa, of course, was absolutely furious that Aichi would have the nerve to have super-idol Kourin in a class without him. So, Morikawa comes up with a brilliant plan to infiltrate Aichi's school, and get close to super-idol Kourin.

Jumping ahead to the next day at Aichi's new school, Aichi begins his enlistment campaign to convince people to join his new Vanguard Club. Things aren't going so smoothely until super-idol Kourin decides to join. All of a sudden, Vanguard becomes one of the most interesting topics on campus, and Aichi is flooded with applications to join his new club. However, super-idol Kourin hates people, and refuses to let any of them join, unless they can beat her in a cardfight. Many brave men take up this challenge, but sadly, none succeed. Way to promote club growth, super-idol Kourin.

Anyways, after the long line of potential friends to Aichi is diminished to nothing by super-idol Kourin, Naoki comes up and asks to apply. He brings out the deck he bought from Card Capital, and proceeds to fight super-idol Kourin in the first real fight of the season. Both parties fought valiantly, with a bit of backstory being revealed along the way. As it turns out, Aichi and Naoki used to go to the same school, until Aichi transferred out, due to his being bullied.

Back to the fight at hand, Naoki is feeling the pressure from Kourin's Jewel Knights (New Card Alert!), but manages to pull out history's first Break Ride!!

After a bit of trigger-stacking from Naoki, he pulls out the victory over super-idol Kourin and is admitted to the Vanguard Club! Now, with Aichi's new club formed with 3 members, our heroes look to the future, to see what ride 107 will bring.
